How to layout a timber frame tenon - Timber Framing Online Course Sample
We use a half dovetail through tenon in almost every one of our designs, including the 24' x 24' design and cut sheet that is included with the Purely Post & Beam online course. This video goes over our layout and scoring process that we utilize on every piece of joinery. From careful measurement to scoring all joinery before cutting, this is the same method we have used to cut frames for 50 years. This is a snippet from our full Purely Post & Beam course.

    Cool I’m planning to install a cast iron spiral staircase in my build. 1917 vintage. Salvage from an old school. Also I scored the dumb waiter clockwork to install also. As for the stairs I got three sets. But the railing needs to be updated to code .

    Just cut 2 24' yellow pine "beams" and found your site - you mentioned "heritage oils" as what you use to seal the logs - in Georgia, the concern is mold - and the incredible amount of pine resin initially after the cut. I've searched for this heritage oils - but can you send a link where to find/buy? Much thanks - great content!

    Gaius, at 8:20, you mentioned that sometimes the connecting line might not connect due to the timber not being perfectly square. What would be the solution?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute 4 дня назад

      The solution depends on the cause and severity of the out-of-square issue and, perhaps, your own tolerance for imperfection. Often when working at the end of timbers as we are here, you will find snipe, caused by misalignment between the bed of the planer and the outfeed table. This typically results in the timber tipping down onto the outfeed table as it r its the planer, allowing the planer knives to take a deeper bite out of the timber. Snipe can often be seen with the naked eye or discovered when you place your square on the timber-a distinct dip in the timber that runs from the end of the timber some number of inches back along it. The good news is that you can usually just flip your square to the other, straight, side and proceed with layout. In other words, don’t register off the side that has snipe. If the issue is that the timber is simply unsquare, you can plane it square by reducing its overall size: you can always define a square within a polygon or parallelogram, but it will necessarily be smaller. This will require adjustment to the post as well, and is a partial transition from mill rule to square rule. If your lines miss by only a small amount (you can insert your definition of my purposefully vague ‘small amount’!), then you might choose to simply CONNECT the lines on the fourth corner rather than trying to square across the timber. There, I said it. But, if you do that, pick a side wisely; the top or bottom will both matter less and be less visible whereas the sides need to be square to each other. I’m living up to my reputation of verbosity with this response but hope there is something useful here.

    Years ago, Steve Thomas of This Old House," promoted a project with timber framing. He stated that the best wood for this type of construction was old growth Douglas fir from the Pacific Northwest. That was in the "This Old Money" phase of the show. It was amazing to me that many people then were very concerned about the old growth forests and their unique ecosystems disappearing in the Northwest. Now, I think that they are using second growth (or younger) trees. There are very few mills in the Pacific Northwest that can even process the big logs.

    Something most people don’t understand, is that a razor sharp tool is safer than a dull one, because you use far less effort to make the cut and so dangerous over travel is minimised.

    Question: Do you ever run into a problem where the scarf joint at the point where those pieces are "under squinted" risk causing the mating beam to split in that deep V? Is that a risk?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute 15 дней назад

      That absolutely can be a problem if it is cut in a way that exerts too much pressure into that “V”. In other words if the two mortises are too offset, it is possible that they could become overdriven and split that “V”. We have been timber framing for 50 years(this year) and have never seen it in practice, but with poor design, it could be possible

    What saw do you prefer for cutting a scarf joint? Does that mafell portable band saw do it or a beam saw?

    • @ShelterInstitute
      @ShelterInstitute 17 дней назад

      We use the Makita or Skil 16” beams saws for the scarf, and finish the cut with a rip saw (as in the video). The beams saws let us cut a bit closer to the score line than the Mafell. Thanks for watching!

    Samurai brand sells a diamond file (DFH-70) that can sharpen impulse-hardened saw teeth. I've used it on an impulse-hardened pruning saw several times, and it works well, but I would imagine the smaller teeth on a cross-cut saw would be too difficult
